Five indices that explain your scores without ever entering them: technical, authority, external presence, local, crawler access

What it is

The SEO and GEO scores measure a result: what Google, Bing and AI assistants show of you. The health indices measure causes: the site's technical state, its authority, what is said about you elsewhere, your Google listing, crawler access. They appear under the two Home gauges, in the Site health block: one tile per index, coloured by its level (red critical, amber fragile, green fair or strong), with its score from 0 to 100, its level, the lowest component (its reason on hover) and a link to the page that details it; each score's “Why” line follows the tiles.

Why they are not added to the scores

A technically perfect site can stay invisible, and an imperfect site can be widely cited. Adding causes and results would blur the reading: the scores would say “you are well rated” without you being more visible. The indices therefore stay separate, never combined with one another, and they serve to explain a gap.

The five indices and their components

  • Technical: SEO audit, Chrome Core Web Vitals — loading, responsiveness, stability —, Google indexing of important pages, pages served without errors to Google and Bing according to Cloudflare, Bing crawl without errors, SEO drift.
  • Authority: referring domains, compared with your declared competitors when you have some, domain rank, trend of inbound links seen by Bing.
  • External presence: press, web mentions, brand entity, Wikipedia, Reddit threads and YouTube videos citing the brand.
  • Local — only when a Google listing is linked to the project, otherwise the index does not appear: listing actions — calls, website clicks, directions —, review rating, recent reviews, review response time.
  • Crawler access: AI crawler access to the site, Cloudflare settings, AI crawler visits served without errors.

Google indexing

The Google indexing component of the Technical index is the share of inspected important pages that Google has indexed, for example “46 pages out of 50 indexed · 3 excluded by noindex · 1 with a different canonical chosen by Google”. It reads the latest recent result of each page inspected before the end of the period (Sunday inspection or the Inspect now button of the Indexing tab on the Search Console page). Without Search Console connected, or before the first inspection, it is “not measured”, with the reason. Important pages that are not indexed block the rest of the SEO work: when the component is very low, the action plan puts the prerequisite “Get your important pages indexed by Google” first, with no estimated gain.

Same rules as the scores

  • A component without a source is “not measured”, never a zero; the shares of the others are renormalized. An index with no measured component is greyed out, with its reason.
  • A reading that is too old does not count: each component has its freshness limit; beyond it, it is not measured, with the note “Reading too old: run it again”. The SEO audit of the home page and main pages, the origin's Core Web Vitals and the drift check are rerun automatically once a month, at the Sunday scan.
  • Shares inside an index are fixed: they are not adjusted to your site.
  • A past week is never rewritten.

The link with the “Why” line

Under each score, the Why line explains what holds it back. Cloudflare findings come first when Cloudflare is connected; otherwise, the health indices take over. GEO score: when AI crawler access is low — “Part of the site is closed to AI crawlers: fix this before the content” — or when external presence is weak — “Few external sources talk about you: AI assistants have little reason to cite you”. SEO score: first, when important pages are not indexed by Google — “12 important pages are not indexed by Google: fix that before the content”; then, when the technical index is low, its lowest component; and when your competitors have more referring domains than you — “Your competitors have more sites citing them”.
